My friend, Bonnitta Roy, just turned me on to this RSAnimate presentation by Sir Ken Robinson via Facebook. (BTW: Bonnie’s a real-life friend, not just a Facebook one.) This is a wonderful and powerful presentation on how and why our educational system no longer works for us (if it ever did, depending on who the “us” is). The powerful content is made all the more so by the marvelous technique and technology used by the RSA: the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.
Robinson’s tightly-scripted presentation is incredibly thorough, and the well-crafted production of this 8-minute animation further highlights some of its implicit messages. I would suggest, however, that you view this more than once, consciously seeing it through the lenses of race, class, gender, ethnicity and other social identity and social power perspectives. This will offer an ever deeper understanding of the impact of the educational system on People of Color, women, poor, working and middle class people, and other oppressed communities.
