Ending racial inequities in our institutions and in our society starts with you.

Latino Challenges Workshop

Latino Challenges Toward Racial Justice is a two-day workshop (in-person and virtual) for people who live in or work with Latino communities and who seek to end racial inequities in our institutions and end racism in our society. Latino Challenges engages participants in a critical analysis of how racism disempowers Latino, Latina, Latinx people and communities, and undermines cross-racial antiracism efforts. This workshop offers insights into the social, cultural, political, and economic backdrop of race and racism in Latin America that shapes our people’s collective identity and circumstance in the US today.

  • We weave historical threads that bind peoples of Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the United States in a shared six century-old racial legacy. We critically examine how people of Latin American origin, like people of all other ethnicities, have been racialized and racially situated in the US. In so doing, we debunk the premise that “Hispanic is an ethnicity” which has been used to socially engineer racial demographics and narratives. Also, we highlight how our cultures, identities, and histories of struggle against racial oppression are vital sources of strength for Latinx individuals, families, and communities. Moreover, we emphasize how racism divides Latinos and African Americans, undermining solidarity needed to strengthen our growing multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi-generational movement for racial equity, social justice, and cultural transformation.

AMONG THE TOPICS DISCUSSED:

‣ Perceptual Lenses, Conceptual Frames: Skillsets and Mindsets for Antiracism

‣ Race, Ethnicity, Nationality & the Layered Complexity of Latino Identity

‣ Challenges We Face Today: What Does Racism Have to do With It?

‣ Spain’s Casta System & the Construction of Race Throughout Latinoamérica

‣ Race, Class & Empire in the US: The Monroe Doctrine, Manifest Destiny, and the Racialization of Peoples of Latin American Origin

‣ The Census as Racial Engineering through Public Policy

‣ Colorism & Ethnocolorism: Internalized Racism as Barriers to Organizing

‣ ¡Pa’lante, unidos! Taking Our Rightful Place in Building Cross-Racial Solidarity

For more seasoned activists, organizers, community and organizational leaders of all racial identities, the workshop offers additional insights into Latino culture, history and identity that are often present in our multiracial transformational efforts. As such, this workshop complements other antiracism trainings, which together, are necessary for effective cross-racial organizing ever more urgent in these times.

Latinx Challenges often serves as an entry point to Latinos, Latinas and Latinx people struggling to understand to role of race, racism and Latinx identity in the problems facing our communities.

Retos en la lucha por la justicia racial is available to Latino/a/x groups who require or prefer to engage this workshop in Spanish. An alternative version of Retos en la lucha is also available to groups in Latin America seeking to examine issues of race, racism, colorism and ethnocolorism within the geopolitical and cultural contexts of our southern and Caribbean regions of The Américas.

Identity, Power & Integral Change

Identity, Power & Integral Change is a virtual two-day workshop for social change agents wanting to explore an anti-oppression approach to transformative leadership. Led by Dr. Raúl, this workshop is based upon consciousness-in-action, an approach to integral change rooted in Pan-American ways of knowing, being and doing, East/West and South/North worldviews, and decades of antiracism organizing and social justice engagement in the United States and Latin America.

This is an advanced training, intended for people steeped in a historical antiracism analysis of oppression. We will share many key frameworks, worldviews and psychological underpinnings that inform the work of Cambio Integral, and offer an opportunity to explore aspects of an integral liberatory practice.

  • Through presentations, dialogue, and other activities, participants will expand their understanding of well-being, deepen awareness of power dynamics, explore aspects of identity, examine cultural perspectives, reconsider shared beliefs and group behaviors, and learn practices that foster personal liberation, development and transformation. Group size will be limited to allow ample time for inquiry, reflection and discussion.

AREAS TO BE EXPLORED IN THIS PROGRAM INCLUDE:

‣ Integral Well-Being: Personal and Collective Dimensions of Knowing, Being and Doing

Forces That Hinder: The Matrix of Oppression & the Coloniality of Social & Institutional Power

‣ Psychosocial Aspects of Social Identity within Dominant Culture: Self in Dynamic Relationship to Other(s)

‣ Stages and Dimensions of Human Development and Evolutionary Change

‣ Consciousness-in-Action: Integral Practices for Liberation & Transformation
